I don't count my prayers: SRK

Let me begin this with a folklore by the famous sufi poet Bulle Shah. He once saw a woman, carefully measuring and counting each cup of milk
Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan (TOI photo)
before giving away to every passerby who happened to ask for it.

After some time, walked in a man to whom she handed a cup of milk without measuring or counting the number of cups. Bulle Shah was a little surprised when he saw this. Bewildered, he asked her the reason for such generosity to a particular man. To which she replied, "The reason I didn't measure the milk is because I love this man, and in love you don't count what you give or get." That's the philosophy I follow in life and the way I connect with God.

I love God, in my own way. I am a firm believer in Him; my true friend. I don't count the times I pray to Allah, because I am always praying in my heart...I don't need to show how I pray or count how many times I pray. I don't seek God. I find Him in everything and everywhere. The first time I prayed to God was when my mother lay dying. I never prayed earlier, that's the kind of family we were — a regular Muslim family but one which didn't have any hard and fast rules about praying. I really prayed hard, but she died all the same. That's the irony of prayers.

I feel closest to my parents when I close my eyes in prayer. That's how I connect with God. I count my blessings but I don't count my prayers. Allah has given me so much love through my fans and the people around me — I couldn't have asked for bigger blessings! I have no fear, because I believe in God.

My Name Is Khan is still awaiting a buyer

After severing ties with Yash Raj as sole distributors, Karan Johar's films are being distributed as per his whims. The director-producer has still not decided on the distributor for My Name is Khan (MNIK), a joint production between his Dharma Productions and Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chilles Entertainment.

Buy, buy love: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Karan Johar on the sets of My Name Is Khan

Sources say KJo has  narrowed his choices to Eros International and Fox Star Studios.

Reveals a trade source, "My Name Is Khan has been linked to various corporates after Karan moved out of Yash Raj earlier this year and inked a record deal with UTV Motion Pictures for his upcoming two films, (Wake Up Sid and Qurbaan) which are both being directed by first-time directors under his banner.

But speculation has never ended about which banner will distribute My Name Is Khan. Karan has already made it very clear to UTV that he is not willing to sell My Name is Khan to them."

The source further adds, "However Karan had a hush-hush meeting with the heads of Eros last weekend and discussed the prospect of selling the world-rights of the film to them.

Terms and money were talked about but it is still not clear if Eros has clinched the deal. Another strong possibility for the film is said to be the Fox Star Studios the Asian arm of Hollywood major 20th Century Fox with Star are among the top contenders to bag the film."

Karan has left for the US and starts shooting the last schedule of the film soon.

‘My Name Is Khan’ to Show a Different Side of SRK

hah Rukh Khan will tone down the histrionics for his next role, as a man living with Asperger's Syndrome, in "My Name Is Khan."

The eagerly awaited film, directed by Karan Johar, also stars Kajol — teaming with Khan after an eight-year gap — and Jimmy Shergill.

The film's production team will descend on San Francisco in the last week of May for a month-long location shoot here.

"It's a love story of a Muslim man with Asperger's navigating a complex world with the simplicity and strength of his humanity," the film's screenwriter, Shibani Bathija, told India-West.

The love story between Khan and Kajol packs an emotional punch, and the film promises to redefine what it means to be a Muslim in America today. Johar is reportedly aiming to release the film through an American distributor.

Asperger's Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder on the autistic spectrum. People with Asperger's are often very intelligent but have deficiencies in social skills (for example, they may not pick up nonverbal cues, or establish eye contact), tend to take every comment literally, and are highly sensitive to sounds, smells or colors. Relationships, especially romantic ones, can be extremely challenging.

Bathija fleshed out the love story between Rizvan Khan (Khan) and Mandira (Kajol) by reading "An Asperger's Marriage" by Chris and Gisela Slater-Walker and talking to the couple in depth. She also visited the National Autistic Society in London, and read numerous books on the subject.

"A lot of research has gone into it," said Bathija. "Chris and Gisela's book was one of the many I read, but it was especially informative for the Asperger's male in a marriage with someone who is not on the autistic spectrum. The issues they addressed helped me imagine situations for the script."

Shah Rukh Khan, too, did independent research on the topic, she said. "I gave him all the books, articles and documentaries I had used in writing the script. He has absorbed and involved a lot of that and brought it out wonderfully in his performance." Bathija, whose screenwriting credits include "Fanaa," "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" and "Kidnap," writes her screenplays in English, and another writer is brought in to adapt the dialogue into Hindi.

In the case of "Khan," she's working with Niranjan Iyengar, a wordsmith who also crafted the dialogue for "KANK" as well as "Fashion," "Kal Ho Naa Ho," "Jism" and other top Hindi films.

"It's never a literal translation from the English," explained Iyengar in a phone interview. "It requires much more than just translating."

In addition, writing dialogue — as separate from the story — presents its own hurdles. "It's a very technical area, dialogue writing. It's unique to Indian films," he said.

"Sometimes the actors like to change a lot, such as punch lines, but luckily Shah Rukh and Kajol don't really make too many changes. Ninety-five percent of the dialogue is defined by Karan and me."

Iyengar was unable to find anyone with Asperger's Syndrome who spoke Hindi, he told India-West. "The character is a Muslim man born and brought up in India. Apart from keeping [his language] clinical, I had no reference point.

"Shibani has done a pretty detailed job. It's still tricky."

"My Name Is Khan" is set for a February 2010 release.

Akki wants to renew friendship with SRK

Bollywood is in the mood to dump the old hatchet and build up a new relationship. After Shahrukh Khan befriended with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at Karan Johar's birthday bash, stunt hero Akshay Kumar is in the process of extending olive branch to his friend-turned-foe Shahrukh Khan.

By sending best wishes to Shahrukh's team, Akshay Kumar has tried to bridge the gap between the two, he wrote, "I'd like to send my best regards to Shah Rukh and his team. You've put up a good fight, so don't worry boys you will always be loved!"

Knight Riders poor performance at the IPL2 has broken down Shahrukh and Akki used the very issue to patch up with Shahrukh. Professional rivalry sour Shahrukh and Akshay's relationship.

Let's see whether Akshay's message will melt Shahrukh's heart and he accepts his friendship invitation by dumping the past.

Celebs rock Karan Johar's 37th Bday!

Karan Johar does things in style, and his 37th Birthday bash on Monday night at the Four Seasons hotel became the talk of the town due to the presence of the Bollywood celebrities and socialites.

The 100 odd guests included KJo's good pal Gauri KKaan Johars birthdayhan with Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan with Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor accompanied by Raveena Tandon, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, Imran Khan and Avantika Malik, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Silva, Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jesia, Bipasha Basu and John Abraham and Karisma with hubby Sanjay Kapur, Farah Khan, Farhan Akhtar, amongst others.

The girls who came sans their men included Malaika Arora Khan with sister Amrita, Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, Seema Khan, Maheep Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Lara Dutta, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan,Tanishaa, and Sushmita Sen. The solo men included Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor, Shahid Kapur, Tusshar Kapoor, Rahul Khanna, and Uday Chopra.

While wife Twinkle Khanna was present, Akshay Kumar was conspicuous by his absence perhaps because of his reported rivalry with SRK, or maybe simply due to inconvenience since Akki's currently shooting in Karjat.

Not only the Bollywood brigade, but also society divas like Parmeshwar Godrej and Tina Ambani were seen grooving to music at the party that went on till the wee hours of the morning.

No prizes for guessing why Salman Khan wasn't invited to KJo's 37th birthday bash.  The problem is that Karan's good friend Shah Rukh Khan and Salman are not on talking terms. So perhaps Karan wanted to avoid a 'scene.'  It's heard that Sallu's girlfriend Katrina Kaif was also invited, but she couldn't make it because she was still in South Africa and only landed in Mumbai late last night.

Are you wondering if Ash and Shah Rukh Khan have resolved their differences? Here's a bit of news: Abhishek and SRK were seen holding a long, intimate conversation while Ash kept silent but stayed by Abhi's side, hanging on to every word being uttered by them.

The glitterati were represented by Parmeshwar Godrej, Kaajal Anand, Queenie Dhody and Farhad Taraporewala besides Sheetal Mafatlal.

KJo arrived post 1.30 am and good friend Kaajal played host till he arrived. The party went on till 6 am!
